Cacao 1870
Cacao 1870, Barlovento, Venezuela
Cacao and coffee plantations flourished along the Venezuelan coastal mountain range during the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries and into the early 20th century. By the 1620s, cacao was Venezuela’s primary export and income source. During the early 20th century the discovery of oil changed Venezuela's economy from agricultural to an oil based economy. Many of the Cacao growing villages and plantations could only be reached by boat and after the cacao/coffee economy shifted the boats stopped coming. These communities where almost completely isolated, from the rest of the Country, for many years.
